Bernard “Buster” Brown Legacy Scholarship

Bernard "Buster" Brown gave more than 40 years to public safety. He served as a telecommunicator, EMT, firefighter, and eventually became a leader at the highest levels of this profession, including serving as President of the National Emergency Number Association. He helped shape training, supported national efforts, and mentored people across the country.

But if you talk to the people who knew him, that’s not where they start.

They talk about how he showed up.

They talk about the way he took time for people—especially the ones still trying to find their footing in this job. The way he shared what he knew without hesitation. The way he made people feel like they belonged in a profession that can be hard to stay in.

Bernard “Buster” Brown

He was known for his humor and his passion. People often described him as a “character”—someone who brought energy into the room, who made people laugh when they needed it most, and who still carried the kind of presence that made you want to be better at what you do. He became a role model to many across both the NENA and APCO communities, not just because of what he accomplished, but because of how he treated people along the way.

He believed in building people up.

He believed in helping others grow.

And more than anything, he believed in the people behind the headset.

That’s what this scholarship is built on.

The Bernard “Buster” Brown Legacy Scholarship exists to continue that kind of impact—to give someone in this profession the opportunity to step out, learn, and grow. It helps support attendance at conferences like NENA and APCO, along with training opportunities throughout the year, because not everyone gets that chance. And sometimes, one opportunity is all it takes to change how someone shows up in this job.

If you’re reading this and you care about this profession—if you want to grow, learn, and be better for your center and your people—this is for you.

And if you’re in a position to support it, just know this—every donation goes toward giving someone that opportunity. Someone who will take it, bring it back, and keep that impact moving forward.

Because that’s what Buster did.

He showed up for people.

And this is how that continues.

The Bernard “Buster” Brown Legacy Scholarship is supported by Gold Line Support in partnership with his family.
